I started a new job as a Data Manager at NOW GmbH last October, and it has been a period of significant growth and enjoyment. The past few months have been quite busy at work, leaving me with little time to reflect on what is important and areas for improvement. Nonetheless, I’d like to share some valuable experiences and highlights from my new role.

I have changed 3 companies in the last 4 years. Compared to the previous companies, I like the actual work the most and appreciate a lot:

  • ❤️ Transparent and Positive Company Culture: The company culture is open and supportive, fostering a great working environment. The communication and information are transparent.

  • ❤️ The Nicest Team: Everyone is incredibly helpful and supportive. We celebrate each other’s little and big successes.

  • ❤️ Supportive Team Lead: Our team lead is always there to support us, helping us excel in our roles.

  • ❤️ Freedom and Autonomy: We are encouraged to take responsibility and initiative. Instead of waiting for instructions, we are empowered to make decisions and seek support from team leaders. For example, I took over the Head of the Data Science AG after three months because it was a passion of mine. I conducted a survey, restructured the session, and implemented changes to improve it. Additionally, I organized attendance for female colleagues at the Women+ in Data and AI event. Recently, I initiated an AWS Certification Sprint in the company, with 22 colleagues participating. The most exciting news is that I managed to secure 100% funding for the courses and exam vouchers from AWS.

  • ❤️ Diversity: More than 50 % of data professionals are female. In some tech calls sit only womens. It’s hard to believe but it really feels good to have so many ladies around you.

  • ❤️ Advanced Tech Stack and Abundance of Data: We work with a cutting-edge tech stack and have access to a vast amount of data, which makes the job both challenging and rewarding.

  • ❤️ Trial and Error Culture: We are encouraged to experiment, test and explore new idees.

Overall, I love my new job and enjoy what I’m doing. However, there are some things that could be improved. As a data-driven company, I think it’s important to emphasise the following aspects to make it even better:

  • Recognition: Not every colleague might fully recognize the importance of data and the value of our work. Much of our work is hidden und goes unnoticed and unacknowledged.

  • Compensation: The public sector Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst 2024 salary structure might be good enough for junior roles, but it is unfortunately not competitive for senior data positions. The challenge of retaining and attracting senior tech professionals to the public sector needs to be addressed and resolved.

There are so much more than only work. What I am busy in my free time at the moment:

  • Improving my German: Thanks to the training budget I’ve been in a german advanced individuel course one per week since last November 2023. This October 2024, I plan to take the Goethe Certificate C2 exam .

  • AWS Certificate: I am preparing for the Associate Developer Certification and possibly the Security Certification as well.

  • My family: My parents visit us in Germany for 3 months; my son goes to Gynamsium after the summer in the 5th grade and my little daughter started riding ponys🐴; my dog 🐶 is 11 months old and needs our time; my cats 🐱 bring me time to time mice to the house.

Never stop learning! Never being bored! 🙃😉
